The network structure is presently run and managed by a 3rd party service provider. The elderly operation has decided to make its network structure including local area network(LAN), wide area network(WAN), and external server connected with prioritizing secure communication between the HQ network and the external point.

The server side point will host DHCP, DNS, WEB, and EMAIL servers. The company intends to subscribe to two ISPs to give redundancy and server balancing in terms of internet vittles. The company has  brought two cisco routers. One is for HQ and other for server side networks with one gateway router catalyst 2811 for HQ VoIP, Two multilayer switches and five access switches for the departments.

Now, You have been hired as a network security mastermind to design the network for MTech company. According to the conditions set by the elderly operation. You will consult an applicable robust network design to meet the conditions. You will also apply access control lists and virtual private networks to enable secure communication considering security and network performance factors consummate  to guard the confidentiality, integrity, and vacuity of data and communication.

Case study and Requirements:

  • Design Tool – Cisco Packet Tracer to design and configure the network.
  • Use a Hierarchical model furnishing redundancy at the network.
  • The organization also expects to connect to at least two ISPs.
  • Each department needs to have a wireless network
  • Each department should have an IP phone suitable to call each other.
  • Each department should have a different VLAN and different subnetwork. The voice VLAN id number will be VLAN 120 for the entire network.
  • IP addresses in the server room are to be assigned statically.
  • Carry pot the subnetting to allocate the correct number of IP addresses to each departments
  • Apply basic configurations to all devices
  • All departments need to configure Inter-VLAN routing on their devices.
  • Use OSPF as a routing protocol on both routers and multilayer switches.
  • The network expects all devices to gain IP addresses automatically through DHCP.
  • Use Cisco 2811 router that can support telephony services
  • Configure VoIP on the voice gateway router.
  • Apply SSH in all the routers and multilayer switches for remote login.
  • Configure standard ACL for SSH to allow only the IT department to carry out all remote executive tasks.
  • Configure PAT to use the separate outbound router interface IPv4 address and apply the necessary ACL rule.
  • Setup IPsec VPN between the HQ and side routers and apply necessary ACL rules.
  • Finally, Test communication and ensure everything configured is working as well.

Technology implemented in this project:

  • Topology design and beautification
  • Basic configuration to all layer 2 and layer 3 switch.
  • Switch port security on the server port
  • VLAN configuration on each switch
  • IP addressing and subnetting
  • Assign IP on each server statically
  • VLAN configuration on MLS3 and assign IP on each VLAN
  • OSPF configuration
  • SSH configuration
  • ACL configuration on SSH
  • PAT configuration + ACL
  • IPsec VPN configuration
  • Verify the network.
